Summer Safety -- iVillage

HAVE AN INTERACTIVE TALK

This chat is simple and to the point, and it revolves around three words that usually come to mind when you think about summer: "sun," "water" and "fun."

1. Make a simple illustration of each word on an 8-inch sheet of paper.

2. Hold up the illustration of water and ask, "In what ways can you be safe around water?" Be sure to make these two points during the water discussion:
• Don't swim or play around water without adult supervision.
• Don't swim or play around water alone.

3. Hold up the illustration of the sun and ask, "In what ways can you be safe in the sun?" Be sure to make these two points during the sun discussion:
• Don't spend time in the sun without wearing sunscreen.
• Don't stay too long in direct sunlight.

4. Hold up the illustration of something fun and ask, "How can you be safe while you're having fun? Be sure to make these points:
• Don't go anywhere without adult supervision.
• Don't do things that are dangerous or scare you.

5. After discussing the three illustrations, talk about the importance of drinking plenty of water during summertime.
