Summer Style Tip: The Perfect Trouser Jean

What you really need in your wardrobe this summer is a lightweight jean option for those hot summer nights when you don’t want to be bulked up by heavy denim.

This summer's big trend is all about a play on menswear, which gives us the trouser jean. The trouser jean should be a staple in everyone’s closet. It has a relaxed fit that gives more leeway, so you’re taking advantage of your curves without looking boxy. The best part about these jeans is that unlike much conventional denim, they can be dressed up or down. Pair it with a cute button-down blouse and flats for casual Friday, so you will feel comfortable while still looking neat and pulled together. Or pair it with a spiky heel and a silk top for a night out on the town. It’s a great way to wear denim, and still look sophisticated without coming off as sloppy.

There are two main factors to keep in mind when buying the trouser jean: fit and fabric.

As far as fit goes, a trouser jean does not mean baggy! These aren’t the baggy pants a clown would wear, but a tailored, sleek look that complements your body. It should accentuate your curves, not hide them. Look for jeans that A-line out from the knee, and please be sure to hem your jeans! This is a no-drag zone! You don’t want frayed edges and a sloppy, ripped look on trouser jeans.

When it comes to fabric, feel it and make sure it has the richness that a quality jean demands. Make sure the fabric has a good weight and texture, and read the label. Jeans should only have 2 to 3 percent elasticity in the form of Spandex or Lycra. Any more than that means that you and they belong in an Olivia Newton John video! (Wait a minute -- did I just date myself?)

The Louis Vuitton trouser jean might match your handbag, but we have to admit that it is not recession-friendly. The price is way too expensive to justify buying a pair if your name isn’t Ivanka. However, the look of the steel fabric is just what we want, and we have a great alternative. The Svoboda Trouser Jean runs about $118.00 with a fit that can’t be beat, and comes in three fabulous colors: steel, midnight blue and black. This is a jean that is very popular with many of my customers who love to wear it to work on casual Friday. (What Not To Wear chooses this trouser every time they film an episode at the shop!) The Svoboda Trouser Jean gives you the rich feel of quality premium demin at a very affordable price. In my opinion, Svoboda makes the best premium denim in plus sizes and should definitely have a place in your closet.
