Designer Doug Wilson:

A day at the beach, an afternoon picnic, a cocktail party under the stars. Summer is all about simple pleasures and making the most of the longer days and warmer weather. We asked some of today's design trendsetters to share their favorite summer essentials, then rounded up similar items for you to enjoy. Read on to learn how to incorporate the hottest style-makers' inspired ideas into your summertime routine.

Inspired by his world travels, Doug Wilson's summer essentials will make your outdoor space feel a little more exotic. "In South Africa, my guest house in Cape Town had wonderful outdoor drapes that made the most of the sea breeze. Bring some shade to tone down the summer heat of your decor with some neutral, outdoor drapes," the Trading Spaces pro suggests. Use them on terraces, verandas or to create poolside cabana spaces with a luxe feel. And light your way during a pool party or summer dinner alfresco with festive bottle lanterns. "[They] remind me of the seaside dining establishments I visited while traveling on the Mexican Riviera. They can also be hung and strung on backyard trees and porches," Wilson recommends.

Follow Doug's lead and deck your outdoor spaces with this exotic decor:
