Have you seen the vagina hand puppet yet? Yes, I said "vagina" and "puppet" in the same sentence. Summer’s Eve’s new strategy to get women to learn about their lady parts is through a talking hand representing the vagina. I don’t know about you, but I may never see my hands in the same way again.
Although the animated commercials may seem a bit ridiculous (and for some tasteless or even racist), they do have a point. According to Summer’s Eve, 70 percent of women can’t accurately identify the parts of their vagina. That’s huge! If you don’t know the difference between your vagina and vulva you certainly aren’t alone. I didn’t learn about my lovely lady parts until recently and I’m proud to say I got 5 out of 5 on the Summer’s Eve’s ID the V quiz.
In an attempt to be inclusive, Summer’s Eve has a Latina and African-American vagina, but it seems more like some stereotyping is going on here. One advertisement has the vagina ranting in Spanish about a tacky leopard thong. Another advertisement is giving me the feeling that African-American women spend too much time doing their hair instead of attending to their Vs. Summer’s Eve, what are you trying to say?
I have to admit, a talking vagina is distracting, but she was addressing some relevant issues. It can’t hurt to give our vaginas a little extra attention. I just didn’t realize my vagina was so upset with me about it. I guess she doesn’t speak as loudly as this one. All is well now, sorry boo!
Even if you can’t (and probably shouldn’t) identify the parts of your vagina with a hand puppet, there is some good coming out of this campaign. For the first 25,000 women who ace Summer’s Eve’s ID the V quiz, a dollar will be donated to I am that girl -- an organization dedicated to celebrating the diversity and beauty of women and girls. Can you correctly identify each of your lady parts? You may be surprised at how much you do, or don’t, know.
