What they've got: Antioxidants and lots of tasty fiber—a single apple with its skin contains 20 percent of the recommended daily fiber intake for most women.
Why they're super: Eating apples has been associated with a lower risk of several kinds of cancer, heart disease, asthma, type 2 diabetes and stroke.
Some super varieties: Red Delicious are the most common variety of apples in the U.S., but there are many others, such as Jonagold, Gala, Braeburn, Ginger Gold and Honeycrisp that are worth trying.
Tip: Apples are grown in all 50 states, so keep an eye on your local farmer's market for various varieties throughout the growing season.
