Facing Your Problems
What do we gain when we run away from our problems? And is it really more than we lose?
What we gain is fleeting and false. We gain the illusion of peace of mind or control. We can believe for a while that our problems are behind us or that they were not very serious to begin with. We gain the contrived certainty that we can keep life's harshness at bay, that we are brave enough, good enough, wise enough to manage whatever comes our way. Or that someone will rescue us before it's too late.
We can believe, for a little bit longer, that we can defeat life.
Excerpt from Surviving Betrayal: 365 daily meditations for women whose partners have been unfaithful
All of it is false. Life and its difficulties still nip at our heels, waiting patiently for us to slow down or stumble. Life will catch up with us. Life always has the power to defeat us as long as we believe we have all the power we need to battle it alone.
What we lose when we run from our problems is the opportunity to learn -- the learn humility in the face of our own limitations, to learn how to listen to the voice of our own spirit, to learn that life's difficulties light the way to healing.
TODAY I WILL TRY TO STAND STILL LONG ENOUGH TO FACE MY PROBLEMS. I WILL REJECT THE FLEETING AND THE FALSE, THE ILLUSIONS THAT LIFE TEMPTS ME WITH. I WILL ACCEPT THE GIFTS THAT COME WHEN I QUIT RUNNING AWAY.
