It was inevitable, no? Britain's Got Talent's hottest (but homeliest) star Susan Boyle is no longer a "hairy angel" (as she was called by the British press). The surprise singer nabbed herself an astonishing makeover, complete with newly brunette hair, plucked eyebrows, and spiffy duds (she went from a frump dress to a leather jacket, posh specs and a Burberry scarf.)
I’m surprised it took this long, frankly. You simply cannot be successful in this world unless you’ve been groomed, polished, slimmed, augmented or somehow made better. But a large part of Boyle’s charm was her “one of us” appeal, no?. She looked ordinary – less-than, according to some. She was the book forever being judged by its cover. Now that the limelight has hit, I’m sure she felt the pressure to freshen up her looks, and I don’t begrudge her that. I guess I just wish it weren’t so cliché, so utterly expected, that a “dumpy”-looking woman with a phenomenal voice needs to wax and dye in order to succeed.
Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan wrote (pre-makeover), “The tale of Susan Boyle will not be complete until the shy spinster blossoms. Those who have been entranced by her story so far should let Boyle's fairy godmother finish her work." That said, Givhan added, "Boyle would not be mesmerizing if she were not an ugly duckling.”
Do you agree?
And who wants to take bets on how soon she's talking weight loss with the tabloids? The over-under is four weeks.
