You Asked, We Answered: What to Do About a Dark Kitchen?

Susanna's Answer

A great kitchen can make you feel good. So what can we do to make you feel better about this one without starting from scratch? I don't think you should repaint your kitchen except perhaps to choose a more complex shade of white for the ceiling. Adding a third color would only darken what is already a very heavy space. Open shelving where the upper cabinets are now would ultimately and ideally lighten and brighten your space, but of course this would be expensive. Since you are not able to remove or refinish the cabinets, your redo choices are limited. We are left to transform some of the accessories that contribute to the existing executive style. These are easy to tinker with and if done with a touch of whimsy and humor, can cause the eye to linger in the details instead of sweeping over the room with uniformity.

The green and gold color combination in this kitchen feels very corporate eighties. Taking off the gold cabinet and drawer knobs and replacing them with silver ones will make an instant impact: I know it's time consuming but it would coordinate the steel of your refrigerator, microwave and stove and add a modern vibe for half the cost and time of redecorating the kitchen! This Arthurian knob (top) is both unexpected and glam, while the Pietre knob (bottom) would pull the white color from your walls and ceiling into the mix.
