Up to 40 percent of childhood ear infections could be prevented with a promising new therapy, a sugar substitute called xylitol, Finnish scientists report.
The sweetener, regarded as an effective cavity preventive in Europe, also fights two bacteria that cause about two-thirds of ear infections, says Matti Uhari, a pediatric specialist at the University of Oulu in Finland.
