If you were a girl of reading age anytime between 1983 and 2003, you probably remember devouring a few Sweet Valley High books.
The phenomenally successful young adult series, which followed the day-to-day adventures of identical (but otherwise opposite) twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, has spawned at least eight spin-off series, a TV show, and even a rumored musical. And now: a movie!
Oscar-winning Juno writer Diablo Cody, fresh off the (albeit disappointing) opening of Jennifer's Body and still glowing from her Emmy-lauded Showtime series United States of Tara, wants to make the Sweet Valley film adaptation her next teenage-girl-fest. Here's what Cody has spilled so far about the project on her Twitter feed:
- She identifies with both twins: "Like most girls, I'm a Jelizabeth.")
- The film will be set in the '80s: "Don't feel like brokering some deal with T-Mobile to give Enid a Sidekick."
- She's a fan of the twins' rich-bitch nemesis Lila Fowler -- who is awfully Megan Fox-y -- Just sayin'.
- She's thrilled that hardcore fans have started contacting her: "Sweet Valley High characters are tweeting at me. I'm having a nerdgasm."
- She doesn't want to upgrade the Wakefield girls' ride: "I brought up the Fiat in every pitch. I think it's important."
- The genre will be "Sharp comedy/satire, plenty of 'sincere' SVH moments too. No werewolves."
- Elizabeth's sweet boyfriend will be featured prominently: "Plenty of Todd."
- It won't be anything like the '90s TV show: "Oh, I assure you it won't be."
- Cody fought hard to get the gig: "You have no idea how many bitches I took down to do this project. I went 'full Jessica.' Believe it."
