There's plenty of fighting in the Expendables films, but the juicy stuff is apparently happening offscreen! On Tuesday, Sylvester Stallone announced that his Expendables 3 co-star Bruce Willis had been fired and replaced by Harrison Ford. Stallone delivered the news via Twitter, with all the bitchy glee of a Real Housewife kicking her frenemy out of a dinner party.
WILLIS OUT... HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!— Sylvester Stallone (@TheSlyStallone) August 6, 2013
GREEDY AND LAZY ...... A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE— Sylvester Stallone (@TheSlyStallone) August 6, 2013
Why is Rocky Balboa calling John McClane "greedy and lazy?" The Hollywood Reporter got the behind-the-scenes dirt. Willis, who had an uncredited cameo in The Expendables and starred in The Expendables 2, was scheduled to film for four days on location in Bulgaria. His pay for that half-week of work was $3 million, but that wasn't enough money to feed Bruce's ego. He wanted $4 million; in other words, a million dollars a day.
"Stallone and everybody else said no," a source told HR. And yes, Stallone had a say in firing Willis; the Italian Stallion is the screenwriter of all three Expendables movies.
Once Willis made good on his threat to drop out, Sly immediately called up Ford, 71.
"I think [Willis] was pretty surprised he was replaced in 72 hours by Harrison Ford -- a better actor, a much nicer person and a more interesting direction for the film," said the insider.
It's astounding to us that anyone could turn down $3 million to do what they love for four days -- but hey, that's Hollywood, land of the giant inflatable ego. Willis should just be careful that his money-driven decisions don't blow up in his face. There are plenty of cautionary tales about greedy actors. A recent one: Julia Roberts could have starred in The Blind Side (and possibly taken Sandra Bullock's Oscar) if she'd agreed to a lower salary. Of course, no actor is likely to win an Oscar for The Expendables 3...
