Take Back the Family Dinner with a Phone Stack!

A phone stack is a fun new way to get people to surrender their cell phones during meals

We're all guilty of being glued to our phones, but when the entire family is talking and texting through dinner, it's time to draw a line. (At least until everyone's done eating.) Clearly, we're not alone in this battle -- the phone stack, a cool idea sweeping the Internet, turns this problem into a fun game.

Here's how it works: everyone places their phone facedown in a stack in the middle of the dining table. Even if your phone rings or you hear an email or text come through, you can't touch your phone until the meal is over. The first person who touches their phone has to pick up the entire table's bill -- so there's a big incentive to really unplug.

Of course, if you're out and the kids are home with a babysitter, this might not be a great plan. But if the kids are with you, it can be a great way to force yourself to enjoy your meal -- and your family -- without distractions.

The phone stack can work at home too. Instead of paying the bill, the "loser" has to wash the dishes, cook dinner the next night, take the dog for a walk, or do whatever random chore you wish. Or up the ante and make the penalty something crazy, like running around the house twenty times while wearing a silly hat. Since everyone won't be talking on the phone, you'll have plenty of time to debate the perfect punishment.
