Talk It Up

Don’t surprise your child with a brand-new bed or convert his crib without warning. Most kids need time to get used to the idea of saying goodbye to their beloved crib and sleeping somewhere new. A month or so before you make the switch, tell your son about what’s going to happen and why (“the new bed will be more comfortable” or “the new bed will be safer for you”). Then, talk up all the great things about his new bed: it will be bigger (unless it’s a toddler bed), springier, and he’ll be to get in and out of it more easily.
