Talk's Cheap, So Is Fitness
We’re not talking subs, we’re talking fitness here. Getting in shape doesn’t mean you have to join a trendy gym, follow the latest celebrity workouts or get a personal trainer. You can buckle down, tone up and lose weight all for under five dollars. (And in some cases, even for free!) We show you how.
Exercise on Demand
The easiest and cheapest way to have a personal trainer is to watch one… for free. ExerciseTV offers exercise videos on everything from tummy toning to kickboxing. We also have an extensive library of workout videos from ExerciseTV and our virtual coaches. Check it out here. The best part: You can do it on your own time, anytime.
Walk the Flight
A great way to get in a cardio workout is to walk a flight of stairs. Pass on the elevator and use the stairs to get to your office or apartment. Or, make a workout out of it and try to walk up and down a flight of stairs in a building or outside until you break a sweat. It’s a free way to get your heart pumping and your lower body toned.
Fully Equipped
Jump rope is one of the best cardio workouts you can get. An average woman burns approximately 424 calories with 45 minutes of moderate rope jumping and you could burn up to 1,200 calories with 45 minutes of intense jump rope exercises. (Calories burned varies by weight.) The best part is you can get a jump rope for around two dollars. Buy one here.
Pantry Workout
If you have cans and water bottles lying around in your pantry, you can use them as free weights. Start off with 12 reps with the 15-ounce cans (almost 1 pound), then move on to 1-liter water bottles (about 2 pounds) and do another 12 reps. If you prefer a heavier weight, a gallon of water is about 8 pounds. Be creative and mix it up. Just be careful not to use something that’s too heavy or could throw you off balance.
Just Dance
Music can really get you moving if you’ve got the right mix. For 99 cents per song, download some MP3s for a fresh workout playlist. Still can’t make it to the gym? Blast your new tunes and just dance. We’re loving some Lady GaGa and Lily Allen lately.
A Healthy Rental
Check out workout DVDs from the library for free or rent workout DVDs from the video store for about five dollars. Not thrilled about having the clerk see your selection of Buns of Steel? Put a fitness DVD on your Netflix cue.
More Money Savers
Working out is tough enough. No need to worry about money while you're breaking a sweat. Here are some budget-friendly tips.
