There must be something in the air! Just weeks after Angelina Jolie and father Jon Voight ended their years-long estrangement with a family vacation to Italy, Tatum O'Neal and father Ryan O'Neal have announced their reconciliation.
Former child star Tatum, 46, and '70s heartthrob Ryan, 68, hadn't spoken in nearly 10 years. Both stars have struggled with drug and legal problems; in her 2005 memoir A Paper Life, Tatum accused her father of physical and emotional abuse, which led her down the road to addiction. The family members were so estranged that Ryan (by his own admission) unknowingly hit on his daughter at Farrah Fawcett's funeral.
But time heals all wounds, and Tatum decided to call her father and make amends. "I was waiting by the phone," Ryan told Access Hollywood. "Dads are patient."
"It feels beautiful," Tatum said of their renewed relationship. Does that mean they have worked through their past issues? Well... maybe not.
"We don't have any crossed words. We don't go back. That's the only way to do it," says Ryan.
"And I'm just grateful -- grateful to have the time, grateful to be part of his life," added Tatum. She suggested that the death of Fawcett -- O'Neal's longtime partner, who was also close to Tatum -- inspired her to hold out an olive branch to her father. The two are now united in petitioning the Academy to recognize Fawcett, and looking out for Ryan and Farrah's son Redmond O'Neal, currently in jail and rehab for drug changes. They also showed up together to the red carpet premiere of The Runaways.
Now that the O'Neals and the Voights have made peace, we hope that this spirit of reconciliation works its way over to Christian Bale. It sounds like his estranged mother really misses him.
