Can My Husband Sign My Name on Our Return?
My husband works out of state and has our income taxes filed there. For the last three years he has signed my name, and I never see the tax statement. Could we get into legal trouble because of the forgery? (It's against my wishes that he does this.)Question:
No, it's not legal to forge someone else's name. But if you haven't filed a different tax return, the IRS will assume that you are agreeing to the return and that it's okay for your husband to sign your name. If you file a different tax return, then they will accept the one you actually sign and reject the other one.
As for handling your hubby. Perhaps you can threaten to file your own return--and notify the IRS that you have not signed his-- unless he lets you see and sign the one that he's preparing.
