Taylor Kitsch isn't exactly an onscreen virgin. He's had steamy love scenes with the likes of Brooklyn Decker (Battleship) and Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights) -- but when it came to his new Oliver Stone drama Savages, bedding costar Blake Lively wasn't exactly fun.
Getting busy with Lively (who plays his shared girlfriend with his partner in pot growing, played by Aaron Johnson) was as tough to master as battling special-effects aliens in Battleship and John Carter, Kitsch, 31, reveals.
"It's very awkward to do, you know, and I was just glad it was over with, to be honest," Kitsch tells People about their sex scenes, which are presumably more graphic than the brief love scenes he's shot in the past. "And it's such a big part of [my character] and who he is, and that's how you meet him. So it's a pretty intense reveal, no pun intended."
The primetime heartthrob (Tim Riggins!) adds that compounding the awkwardness was that he didn't have time to get to know Lively, 24, before they began getting it on for the cameras.
"A lot of sexual improv was going on there," he says. "God knows we had two weeks of rehearsal, so we talked until we were about to pass out, and then [we shot the sex scenes] on the day I think I knew Blake three days … four days maybe."
As for the sensitive topic of Kitsch's back-to-back disappointments (neither John Carter nor Battleship cleared even $75 million at the box office), the Friday Night Lights alum will only say that he's not doing any big budget sci-fi or fantasy in the near future.
"No green screen for a while," he admits. "It's back to just mano a mano, working with actors."
