Taylor Swift, you've had quite a year: a #1 album with Fearless, entertainer of the year at the CMAs, Billboard Magazine's artist of the year, best female video at the VMAs, and now four Grammys, including album of the year. And you've only just turned 20! So maybe it's not too shocking that a backlash is brewing.
Here's what people are saying: That your live performances, like the ill-conceived "Rhiannon" duet with Stevie Nicks at the Grammys, are weak. That you only got the album of the year Grammy (beating out frontrunners Lady Gaga and Beyonce) because of sympathy following the Kanye West incident at the VMAs. And that your wide-eyed innocence isn't going to fly anymore, now that you're a major player in the music industry.
But we disagree! Taylor, here are three reasons why you should ignore the haters:
1. You're different than other "child" stars.
Unlike Miley Cyrus, you had the benefit of a normal childhood -- and supportive parents who aren't exploiting your earnings or fame. Rather than take the fastest route to celebrity, you turned away from a big record contract to sign with an independent label at age 14, proving that your artistic integrity started early and that you're not interested in fame for fame's sake.
2. You have talent to burn.
Sure, you're young and gorgeous, but you started out as a songwriter, and that's a gift that will never age. You're better at writing catchy hooks than nearly anyone in the business, and we're certain we'll still be humming your songs in 20 years.
3. You're in control of your career.
We love that you haven't starred in any tabloid scandals, that you channel your romantic energy into your songs, and that every choice you make -- from movie roles to the charities you support -- seems carefully thought out. And right now is no exception: Just as the backlash is brewing, you're leaving to tour Australia. By the time you return to the U.S., we'll have just started to miss you. And we bet you planned it that way.
