How can someone as cute as Taylor Swift be single? In the clip below from Wednesday's Ellen DeGeneres Show, the 21-year-old songstress swears that she "for real" has no boys in her life right now. (Even her denials are cute!)
Swift, who was just named Billboard's youngest-ever Woman of the Year, didn't fall for Ellen DeGeneres' clever trick question about her new perfume, Wonderstruck: "And does your boyfriend like the way it smells?" Ellen slyly asked.
"I don't have one! I just don't!" Swift exclaimed. "I for real don't have a boyfriend. I sit by myself and I watch Law & Order. I don't have, like, even kind of a boyfriend. I don't have someone that I'm texting that's a guy that someday might be my boyfriend."
The "Sparks Fly" singer-songwriter makes a good case for flying solo, though.
"If you're the girl that needs a boyfriend and once she loses that boyfriend needs to replace it with a different boyfriend... I don't feel like I ever want to be that girl," she told Ellen. "I want to be the girl that when she falls in love, it's a big deal and it's a rare thing."
And Ellen, while applauding Swift's independence and calling her a "good role model," couldn't resist the punchline.
"Listen to her! Take it from me, you don't need boys," the talk-show host deadpanned.
Boys may not be necessary, but they've always been among Taylor Swift's biggest songwriting inspirations. The 2010 album Speak Now in particular is full of thinly veiled references to past love interests and would-be boyfriends, among them Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Adam Young and Cory Monteith.
"Every single song is like a road map to what that relationship stood for, with little markers that maybe everyone won't know, but there are things that were little nuances of the relationship, little hints," she told MTV of her last album.
Swift most recently dated Jake Gyllenhaal, and was reportedly caught gossiping about him with another of his ex-girlfriends, Reese Witherspoon. Now that's a conversation we'd like to hear set to music!
