Taylor Swift Invites Teenage Cancer Patient to ACM Awards

Taylor Swift has always seemed like a total sweetheart, and now she's proven it. The country-pop sensation has invited Kevin McGuire, an 18-year-old superfan who's battling leukemia, to be her date to the American Country Music Awards -- an offer he's gladly accepted!

The dream date originated, of all places, on Facebook. In an attempt to brighten her brave brother's day, McGuire's big sister Victoria set up a page called "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM!" Kevin, a varsity football player in Somerdale, N.J., was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 13 years old and has been in remission since 2010. Unfortunately, the cancer has now returned, putting a pall over his senior year of high school.

"Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could even fathom meeting," Vitoria writes on Facebook, "and through out his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned, 'why me?' Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift. Kevin DESERVES more than anyone a special event in his life... and the one thing he wants is to GO TO PROM WITH TAYLOR SWIFT!"

The Facebook page soon gathered tens of thousands of followers, and the story was picked up by a local Fox News affiliate, which reached out to Swift's record label on Kevin's behalf. Thanks to this collective effort, Swift, 22, finally heard about the campaign while promoting The Lorax in Australia. On Friday, she responded on her own Facebook page.

"Kevin, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom," writes the singer. "But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up.. Would you be my date? Love, Taylor."

With news reporters present, Kevin McGuire reacted with amazement to Taylor's invitation (see video below).

"I don't know what else to say! I was just trying not to throw up," joked Kevin, who is undergoing rigorous cancer treatments at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania.

"I have cancer. Cancer doesn’t have me," McGuire told the cameras. "Taylor, I would love to go with you."

Kevin is not currently healthy enough to travel, but he's optimistic that he will be by April 1, the day that the ACM Awards take place in Las Vegas. Hopefully, the upcoming date with his dream girl will help motivate Kevin to kick cancer in the butt!
