Taylor Swift hit the books for her new video, "The Story of Us." The 21-year-old singer went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. -- during a tornado! -- to film her latest country-rock breakup tune. The video premiered on Tuesday night on MTV, but you can watch it right here!
Swift has never actually attended college, and we can't help but be tickled by her idea of what happens at a university library: Girls in knee socks and messy braids fall asleep on their books, nerdy students flirt by trying on each other's glasses, etc. It's all very cute in that patented Taylor Swift way. But the singer says that the real-life story behind the song happened in a different setting entirely.
"I was at an awards show, and there was a guy there, obviously -- it all starts there, doesn't it?" Swift hints in an MTV.com interview. She says the song is about "that excruciating, awful moment when you run into an ex for the first time."
But which ex is it? Swift has said that "The Story of Us" is about the same guy who inspired her song "Dear John" -- widely believed to be her rumored fling John Mayer. If "Story of Us" is indeed about Mayer, its roots may have sprung from the awkwardness between the pair at the 2010 Country Music Awards.
So will Swift ever follow through on the video's premise and go to college herself? In a 2007 CMT interview, she said that she had decided to pursue her career instead of higher education.
"I always thought that I would go to college, most definitely. But then I really thought about it and assessed the situation, and I can't leave this life, "explained the then-teenage singer. "Going to college would mean saying goodbye to my music career, and I just can't do that. Maybe later on in life I'll end up taking a few classes or doing it online. But right now, it just isn't where I need to be."
Well, if she ever decides to go, we know she has the wardrobe for it!
