We're sorry to be the ones to have to break it to you, but Doug Hutchinson and Courtney Stodden are splitting up. We know, it's a shock. Take a moment.
Lost actor Hutchinson married Stodden in May 2011, when they were 51 and 16, respectively. Somehow, they spun their controversial "teen bride" love story into two years worth of D-list fame and reality TV appearances. But we all knew that the honeymoon would end sooner or later. (Correction: sooner.) Us Weekly reports that 19-year-old Stodden's recent stint on Britain's Celebrity Big Brother was the catalyst for the break-up.
"She realized that there is this whole world out there to explore," an Us source says of Stodden's Big Brother experience. "She was so reliant on Doug up until doing the show, but after going so far away, she realized she could survive by herself. ... [It was] her first ever experience of having independence. The dynamics had suddenly totally changed. They've been arguing so much since they came back from London."
The couple has yet to release a statement, and it's unknown whether they've filed divorce papers. We also wouldn't rule out the possibility that this break-up is a publicity stunt to delay the inevitable. Either way, this divorce is inevitable -- and the 35-year age difference is only one reason. Here are 5 others.
#5. Courtney and Doug barely knew each other when they got married. The couple got hitched just days after meeting for the first time, following an email courtship that lasted between four and six months. When did they actually get to know each other? In between press appearances, we suppose.
#4. Courtney is not an "old soul." That was Doug's go-to defense of the age gap, but judging from those episodes of VH1's Couples Therapy we watched, Courtney Stodden is the epitome of a typical teenager. She's flighty, rebellious and mega-insecure (remember all that recent plastic surgery?). She has delusions of grandeur, and has trouble understanding consequences and boundaries. She may have looked 25 for years now, but mentally and emotionally, she was in no way ready to walk down the aisle. And someone in her life -- either Doug or her parents -- should have noticed.
#3. Every time Courtney was interviewed next to Doug, she made incredibly bizarre faces. This can't have been a good sign, right? Observe:
#2. Courtney's mother is a better match for Doug than Courtney. A scene from Couples Therapy demonstrated how messed-up this relationship was in the first place: during a therapy session with her daughter, Courtney's mother and manager Krista gushed about how she wished she could find a man like Doug. To anyone watching, it seemed obvious that Courtney's mother, a more age-appropriate match, is literally in love with her son-in-law. They're probably all grateful that the awkward Thanksgiving dinners have come to an end.
And the #1 reason why Courtney and Doug's split was inevitable....
