If you watched MTV's 16 and Pregnant, you might have seen its follow-up series, Teen Mom, and wondered, "What's Catelynn doing on this show?" Catelynn, after all, was the teen who didn't end up going the "teen mom" route. Unlike Maci, Farrah and Amber, she chose to give her baby up for adoption.
So what's she doing on Teen Mom (Tuesday, 10 p.m. ET)? Watch a few episodes and you'll find that, sadly, she does belong. Catelynn is forced to be a mom, too -- to her mother. Catelynn's foul-mouthed and recalcitrant mother, April, has figured prominently in the last few episodes of the show.
When Catelynn's story began, it chronicled a trial she faced from her own bad choices -- and those of her boyfriend, Tyler. But her tale is shaping up to be something else entirely: An expose on the hardships of life with a terrible parent.
April is without a doubt a modern-day Mommy Dearest. Appearing to be a chain-smoking hillbilly with an apparent disinterest in parenting, she met Tyler's father, Butch, through Catelynn -- and subsequently married him. Butch, a guy with a long mullet and a fondness for wife-beater T-shirts, is a convicted felon (for drug possession). He seems to be constantly in and out of rehab.
In this clip, we see April's spin on the "clean up after yourself" argument that's so common among mothers and teens. April's version sounds more like a conversation at a truck stop -- or on Jerry Springer. “Sit in your f*ckin’ room until you rot!" she screams. "You’re such an a**hole, I swear to God. You’re gonna live here and not communicate with me, or associate with me, you can start paying me f*ckin rent and be a f*ckin' roommate. Condescending bitch!”
Later, April behaves like a petulant teen at DEB, the clothing store where Catelynn is buying her prom dress. The nasty insults Catelynn endures may even be worse than the fact that she's buying her prom dress at DEB.
Catelynn explains that her mother is still angry that she gave up the baby for adoption. This is probably true. The choice implied, rather loudly, that her home environment wasn't suitable for a baby. As April rages against this notion, we viewers see how right Catelynn was in her decision.
The well-meaning but hapless Tyler may not be a knight in shining armor. But if the kid sticks around long enough to marry Catelynn, she will have a chance to move out from under April's shadow. At this point, that seems to be her only shot at freeing herself from this raft of verbal abuse, and turning her life around.
