Two years ago this month, MTV debuted its wildly popular documentary show about what it's like to be 16 & Pregnant. Then came the spinoff, the ratings bonanza Teen Mom, which followed four of those teens around after they gave birth. Maci Bookout, Farrah Abraham, Amber Portwood and Catelynn Lowell went on to become household names (or at least familiar tabloid faces). On July 5, these four will return for the show's third season (MTV, 10 p.m. ET).
They are the hardened veterans of this MTV franchise, which has become part of our national, cultural zeitgeist. (Two more casts of knocked-up girls have come up behind the first one.) Nowadays, it's no big deal to see a Teen Mom star on a magazine cover, or to hear about one of them getting in trouble with the law. In fact, whenever that happens, newer cast members are often compared to Portwood -- the original "troubled" Teen Mom.
And if the newly released season 3 trailer is any indication, life hasn't gotten any easier for Portwood -- or any of the others whose babies are now toddlers. Portwood and her baby daddy, Gary Shirley, continue their volatile relationship, exchanging restraining orders and the same old foul-mouthed allegations of cheating and abuse.
Catelynn and her boyfriend Tyler Baltierra appear to be still dealing with their emotionally unstable parents, as well as the repercussions of giving their daughter Carly up for adoption. Maci is seen struggling with finishing school, raising son Bentley, and working at a new relationship with boyfriend Kyle King, all while fretting over the continuing custody battle with her ex, Ryan Edwards. And Farrah looks to be making a move, but will her daughter Sophia come along?
It will also be interesting to see if the girls' growing fame has affected their lives. Being such a young mother is one thing; being such a young and famous mother is quite another.
