Here's Something New to Panic About: Teens Smoking Alcohol

When you vaporize and inhale alcohol, experts say it can easily lead to alcohol poisoning

You're worried about your teenager drinking and smoking...but how about doing both at the same time?

The newest scary teen behavior trending on YouTube, according to TODAY, is called “smoking alcohol,” which is when air is pumped into a bottle of alcohol and then the fumes inhaled into the lungs, where it travels straight to the brain. You can get drunk in just seconds.

When you booze it up the old-fashioned way, it takes about 20 minutes for the alcohol to reach your bloodstream and start to give you that tipsy feeling. If you drink too much too fast, you’ll throw up -- your body’s way of expelling it before it can poison you. But doctors say this vaporizing of booze is incredibly dangerous and could easily result in alcohol poisoning, since there’s no way for the brain to get rid of the alcohol.

Some teens like it because they believe that it’s a way to get buzzed without gaining weight, but experts say you take in the calories from booze whether you drink or smoke it. There’s also a misconception that this isn’t illegal -- but underage drinking is against the law no matter how you ingest it.
