Thawing breastmilk

My wife has started back to work for 3 days a week. I keep Eli our son those days. We freeze breastmilk . Is ok to thaw it in the refrigerator the night before we use it instead of just before he needs it?

Thanks

Steve

Dear Steve,

It is fine to thaw breastmilk overnight in your refrigerator. The main thing to remember when thawing breastmilk is to do it slowly. If you want to thaw it more quickly, it can be placed in a pan of cool to lukewarm running water. Never microwave breastmilk. It can alter the content.

Fresh, unfrozen milk can be stored in your refrigerator for up to 8 days. When storing fresh breastmilk in the refrigerator, plastic containers best preserve the immunological properties of the milk. Always chill newly expressed milk before adding to cold or frozen milk.

Fresh breastmilk is preferable to frozen. Freezing breastmilk destroys leukocytes, white cells which provide significant protective effects. Best wishes!

Warmly,
Debbi
