'Thintervention': Episode 4 Recap

Sussing out healthy snacks and finding their inner warriors

This week, Thintervention’s focus was on inspiring participants -- and viewers at home -- to tap into their inner warriors. “Warriors don’t give up,” Jackie announced. “They push through the pain.” The group got their cardio on at a park under the threat of rain: Three single-mile runs interspersed with a Kettlebell routine. Not surprisingly, Nikki acted like a total baby, refusing to run in the drizzle for fear of contracting pneumonia. She attempted to quit after two laps, but Jackie pushed her and eventually, she found a hint of her inner warrior (an undersexed endorphin junkie who, it turns out, kind of "gets off" on burning fat), running an extra lap (1/9 of a mile).

A grocery store field trip offered a chance to learn how to shop for healthy snacks that won’t wipe out the fruits of their workouts. Everyone was asked to grab some items that they thought might be on the edge of good-for-you. We learned that sugary cereal, pancake batter in a spray can and dried figs are less than ideal options; dark, nutty breads, avocados, tomatoes, ahi tuna and lemons for water (not vodka) are AOK.

When Jackie ambushed Jeana (thanks for the BMW product placement/commercial, BTW!) at a sunset champagne toast, she found her former-Playmate protégé completely out of touch with her inner warrior, boozing it up and noshing on some sort of fried coconut shrimp monstrosity. Jackie confronted her about the self-sabotage and suggested she try to spend 30 minutes in her garden, reflecting. Off the cuff -- but quite tellingly -- Jeana responded, “I’d kill myself.” She admitted she is extremely unhappy with her life. But will she finally commit to Frau Warner's program?

The extreme workout this episode: Firefighter drills. (Because, Jackie explains, firefighters are the ultimate warriors. Clearly she’s never met a mommy blogger.) Everyone must don a 20-pound firefighter uniform and hike up six flights stairs, bounce heavy medicine balls on the ground, drag 160-pound mannequins to safety and wield a sledgehammer to bang on a big block with all their might. Mandy and Jeana -- the two sexpots of the show -- won the final sprint and, as a prize, got to put out a real blaze with the men in uniform.

At therapy, Joe called Jackie out for making Nikki her “pet project.” Jackie admitted that in any other weight-loss program she would have pulled Nikki out by now, but she feels Nikki needs her guidance the most, especially in light of her fractured childhood. Then it’s on to another disappointing weigh-in, with two people not losing anything at all. When they all started Thintervention, they were consuming 3000 plus calories a day. Now, they’re on 1300 to 1500 calorie diets and exercising far more than before. They shouldn’t be posting such small numbers, Jackie explains, insinuating some (if not all) of them may be cheating.
