Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson lost his father, Peter Jefferson, in 1757 at the formative age of 14. His mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was left with 10 children, Thomas being the third eldest. By his own account, he felt abandoned and alone throughout his teenage and young adult years. Though he meticulously recorded almost every detail of his life, he only mentioned his mother once in his account book on March 31, 1776, writing, "My mother died at eight o'clock this morning, in the 57th year of age."
