In her exclusive blog for the iVillage series CelebVillage, actress Tia Mowry -- who stars on the Style Network reality show Tia & Tamera -- reflects on her dilemma of having her 16-month-old son Cree (with actor husband Cory Hardrict) co-sleep with "momma and dadda."
Okay, I'm gonna admit it! And I am not afraid to admit it: Cree still sleeps with Mom and Dad. There, I said it! But let's be honest -- I was not always confident with such a statement.
The park is often a place where moms get together and chat about all things mommy. For example, did you have a natural birth, are you still breastfeeding, what is the best stroller? The list goes on and on. However, when this one question would come up -- "How is he sleeping?" -- I would find myself skipping the part where I would say, "Yeah, he's actually still in bed with momma and dadda."
Why, you may ask? When I was pregnant, many parents would tell me without me even asking for their advice, "Do not keep your baby in your bed! You will forever regret it! Don't do it! It's bad, bad, bad!"
Well, fast forward, Cree was in our bed… and now feeling a little guilty since I had always heard this is the one thing NOT to do, I decided to have a consultation with a sleep expert. She cut straight to the chase and filled me in on the pros and cons.
Wow?! So there are pros? Okay, this was not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Here are a few things that stood out during our conversation:
-- Co-sleeping helps with breastfeeding, making it more convenient for moms who decide to breastfeed (I found this very helpful during breastfeeding.)
-- Co-sleeping also promotes touch and feel (bonding) for mom and baby. This hit home for me because if you have a busy schedule or a working mom, sleeping with Cree helped me feel more connected and created even more of a bond.
Now to the cons:
-- No sex. Okay, this is a big con. But let's get this straight: Parents just have to learn how to be creative! Hey, I've always wanted to have whoopie in other areas of the house, right? Here's our excuse to explore! The closet now does not seem so bad! Parents may get less sleep, and unfortunately, I did find this to be true. I do sleep a little lighter, but sleeping is for wimps, right?
On a serious note, after our discussion I did walk away with this in mind: At the end of the day, you have to do what's best for you and your family. Every family is different with different desires and needs. It's not the end of the world if you decide to co-sleep and it's okay to not co-sleep.
However, if you decide to co-sleep, just follow the safety guidelines, talk to your doctor and speak with your partner because they have a say-so too. More importantly, co-sleeping doesn't technically mean you will have a teenager sleeping in the bed with you!
So, guess what? Cree sleeps with momma and dadda and I am fine with it, and you should be too! =)
