Will Tiger Woods' Family Attend U.S. Open?

In a press conference, the beleagured athlete is cagey about his wife's whereabouts as another big golf tourney nears

Tiger Woods was already having a bad year -- now, he's coping with a neck injury that forced him to withrdraw from this weekend's Players Championship, and could prevent the golfer from competing in the U.S. Open this summer. At a press conference Monday, Woods said his condition is "still up in the air right now." Another thing up in the air? Whether his wife and kids will be at the tournament to cheer him on. "It's a little early for that," Woods replied when a reporter asked if his family would accompany him to his next tournament.

Sam Woods, 3, and Charlie, 1, have been notably absent from the sidelines during Woods' PGA comeback. Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren, has taken pains to avoid the spotlight, whisking the kids off to her native Sweden just as Woods was resuming his career, post-scandal. Even in her home country, Woods' wife was wary -- renting cars with tinted glass and hiring bodyguards to accompany the family on outings. Nordegren and the children returned to their Orlando, Fla., home on Thursday; as for Tiger, he remains out of town.

So is there any chance of a reconciliation at this point? Seems the answer is no; Woods and Nordegren have barely spent a moment together since his cheating scandal broke last fall, and both have been reportedly seeing divorce lawyers.

The big question now is about the children: Will Woods and Nordegren be able to work out a custody agreement without a huge court battle? RadarOnline reports that the couple plans to share joint custody, with a source saying "This isn't going to get ugly. They've both made sure of that." TMZ, on the other hand, predicts conflict: The site reports that Woods has hired a high-profile lawyer who specializes in enforcing international custody agreements. For the kids' sake, we hope Woods and Nordegren are able to settle things quickly and quietly. You won't see us cheering for Woods anytime soon -- but Sam and Charlie deserve a chance to root for their dad.
