Perched by the edge of the sink, I hovered over the capped plastic stick, waiting. The wedge of white fibers held on to their secret answer for just a minute longer, until finally: Yes! Plus! Pregnant!
I grinned like a fool, snapped a picture for posterity -- and immediately had my doubts: My littles would be just 20 months apart. Were my husband and I crazy to have a second child now? Had we tried again too soon? And why hadn’t I worried about this sooner?
Alas, as it turned out, I miscarried a few days later. But here's the silver lining -- in the mourning that followed, my husband and I found an answer to the doubts we’d had. We knew with absolute certainty that we were ready to grow our family. We got pregnant again quickly, and our two vivacious daughters are 22 months apart. Our family feels just right!
How did you know -- really know -- you were ready for number two? Here's what moms in our community said:
"I remember going back and forth on number two for quite a while. By the time my first was 3, I was SURE. During the baby and toddler stage I had some baby fever but had days where I thought, 'wow, there is NOOOOO way I could handle another one right now.' I'm glad I waited because it worked out well. If I had been able to pick I'd have had my kiddos three and a half years apart. They ended up six years apart thanks to finances and fertility problems." -- macksmommy2b
"We totally planned number two so they would be less than two years apart....we want them to be close buddies. The third, however, was a different story!" -- Kathleen O.
"I wasn't -- number two was a surprise. But I knew I was ready for number three when enough time had passed that my heart would sink when I heard others were pregnant." --Danielle S.
"When I consistently started getting more than four hours of continuous sleep a night. In our house that took 18 months." -- Healther W.
"For me it was knowing we wanted another and I wasn't getting any younger! Our 'plan' was to try and make it happen before my 40th birthday... Well, we got prego on the first try, so now I'm a 41-year-old with two wee ones only a little over two years apart!" -- Katie B.
