Perched by the edge of the sink, I hovered over the capped plastic stick, waiting. The wedge of white fibers held on to their secret answer for just a minute longer, until finally: Yes! Plus! Pregnant!
I grinned like a fool, snapped a picture for posterity -- and immediately had my doubts: My littles would be just 20 months apart. Were my husband and I crazy to have a second child now? Had we tried again too soon? And why hadn’t I worried about this sooner?
Alas, as it turned out, I miscarried a few days later. But here's the silver lining -- in the mourning that followed, my husband and I found an answer to the doubts we’d had. We knew with absolute certainty that we were ready to grow our family. We got pregnant again quickly, and our two vivacious daughters are 22 months apart. Our family feels just right!
