We already have a standing date with Tina Fey and Steve Carell every Thursday on NBC. It's about time they had a date with each other.
In the movie Date Night, coming to theaters next spring, 30 Rock's Fey and The Office's Carell play a married couple who decide to spice up their away-from-the-kids "date night" by hitting a fancy Manhattan restaurant. They can't get a table, so they steal another couple's reservation, leading to a night of mistaken-identity hijinks that involves (as far as we can tell from the trailer) a car chase, a shirtless Mark Wahlberg, the NYPD, a couple of hired killers and an escape through Central Park.
The movie's premise, "boring ordinary couple gets caught up in exciting crime world," has certainly been done before -- The Out-of-Towners and True Lies both come to mind -- but it's never been done with Fey and Carell, and that's why we're excited. Carell is a fantastic movie actor, capable of combining clowning (Evan Almighty) and awkward-guy schtick (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) with a genuine sense of vulnerability (Little Miss Sunshine). As for Fey, she's one of the best things on TV, but has yet to really establish herself as a movie star. Her one lead role, 2000's Baby Mama, was unmemorable, perhaps because her character resembled a less-witty Liz Lemon. But we love Tina, and if there's one thing she's great at, it's playing off other comics. In Date Night, she'll get to go toe-to-toe with Carell in every scene -- and we'll see if she wipes the floor with him.
There's also an amazing supporting cast to look forward to -- in addition to Wahlberg (shirtless!) there's James Franco, Mila Kunis, Leighton Meester, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Taraji P. Henson, Common and The Daily Show's Samantha Bee. So many good cameos, they couldn't even fit them all in the trailer -- check it out below!
