We wish Tina Fey would weigh in on politics more often! The 30 Rock creator, who rocked the 2008 Presidential election with her dead-on SNL impression of Sarah Palin, hasn't been so vocal about this year's race. But at a Wednesday night benefit for women's health, the comedian had some withering remarks for Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin.
Akin, of course, ignited a political firestorm back in August, when he claimed during an interview that women can't get impregnated by "legitimate rape." While speaking at the Center for Reproductive Rights' Inaugural Gala in New York City, Fey tried to wrap her mind around his remarks.
"Todd Akin claims that women can't really get pregnant from a legitimate rape because the body secretes hormones," Fey told the audience. "Now I can't even finish this sentence without getting dumber; it's making me dumber when I say it -- but it's something about the body not being able to get pregnant when it's under physical stress."
"Mr. Akin," she continued, "I think you are confusing the phrase 'legitimate rape' with the phrase 'competitive gymnastics.'"
Fey also lamented that so many male politicians seem utterly clueless about women's reproductive rights issues. (The latest controversy comes courtesy of Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, who declared in a debate that babies conceived by rape are "something that God intended to happen.") "I watch these guys and I’m like what is happening? Am I a secretary on Mad Men?" she joked.
"I wish we could have an honest and respectful dialogue about these complicated issues, but it seems like we can't right now," Fey told the crowd. "And if I have to listen to one more grey-faced man with a $2 haircut explain to me what rape is, I'm going to lose my mind."
Tell us about it! Also appearing at the benefit was Stanley Tucci, who encouraged the audience to sign the Bill of Reproductive Rights at DrawTheLine.org. Other famous supporters of the Center for Reproductive Rights include Meryl Streep, Audra McDonald, Kyra Sedgwick, Sarah Silverman and Kevin Bacon.
