Say what you want about Tom Cruise, but when it comes to his 7-year-old daughter Suri, the gloves are off.
The Oblivion actor filed documents on Tuesday in a $50 million lawsuit against Life & Style and In Touch magazines over their 2012 tabloid stories that claim Cruise abandoned his daughter.
"I have in no way cut Suri out of my life -- whether physically, emotionally, financially or otherwise," Cruise wrote in the court documents filed against Bauer Publishing, according to TMZ. "Even during the times when I was working overseas and was not able to see Suri in person, we were (and continue to be) extremely close."
While shooting back-to-back films in 2012, Cruise claims that he spoke to his daughter almost every day through "numerous" exchanges via email.
"I was a constant presence in her life," he says in the documents. "While I'm sure my daughter misses me when I am not with her (as I miss her), she is a very happy child, and we have a wonderful relationship and cheerful phone calls."
Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in June 2012 after six years of marriage. Primary custody over their only daughter was granted to Holmes.
And while we haven't seen the father-daughter duo together like they used to be before the divorce, by no means does that prove he is a negligent father. After all, Cruise took the allegations that he abandoned his daughter pretty hard.
"What I find most disturbing is that I have to sit here and look at this photograph of my daughter with 'Abandoned by Daddy' -- to me, that is what sticks out the most," Cruise said in his Sept. 9 deposition, referring to one of the tabloid cover stories in question, according to E! News. "I mean, come on, that is absolutely disgusting. That is absolutely disgusting," he added. "And I have to tell you, with everything -- listen, I am a public person, I absolutely understand. For me there is -- I tolerate a tremendous amount and I am very privileged to be able to have the life that I have and I believe that. But there is a line that I draw for myself and... and that's it."
Since Cruise entered the spotlight over 30 years ago, he has been subject to constant tabloid speculation, from his relationship and divorce from ex-wife Nicole Kidman, to his controversial involvement with Scientology, to his whirlwind romance and split from Holmes. And despite all of the negative stories about him, Cruise decided to sue over ones that defamed his relationship with Suri.
"I asked for an apology," Cruise said in his deposition. "I asked for a retraction. [Bauer Publishing] denied it, wouldn't do it."
Looks like In Touch and Life & Style are learning their lesson the hard way: Don't mess with Tom Cruise and his kids.
