Suri Cruise might have gotten a scare Monday night when a garbage truck sideswiped the car she was riding in with mom Katie Holmes -- but Tuesday she had a reason to smile: a visit from dad Tom Cruise.
The 50-year-old movie star jetted from California to New York City on Tuesday, and was photographed carrying his 6-year-old daughter into a Manhattan hotel. It is believed to be the first time Tom and Suri have seen each other since before Katie, 33, filed for divorce on June 29. By all accounts, Cruise was delighted to finally get some quality time with his little girl.
"Tom looked really happy," an observer in N.Y.C. told People.
"He's been dying to see her," another source added. "He'll be with her whenever he can."
Now that Cruise has wrapped up filming on the sci-fi thriller Oblivion -- which he was shooting in Iceland when he learned that Holmes had filed for divorce -- Tom's schedule is a bit more open than it has been. And sources tell People that he'll spend "several days" with Suri in the Big Apple.
Still, Tom will likely have to get used to a coast-to-coast commute if he wants to see his daughter with regularity. That's because Cruise is based in Los Angeles, and Holmes -- who reportedly received primary custody of their daughter in the ex-couple's July 7 divorce settlement -- seems intent on raising Suri in New York. (Good thing Tom has a private jet!)
Katie recently moved into a new apartment in the city, and even enrolled Suri in Manhattan's Convent of the Sacred Heart school (which, by the way, is private, Catholic and Lady Gaga's alma mater) for the fall term.
Luckily, it sounds like both Cruise and Holmes are committed to being a part of their daughter's life no matter what it takes. "They both know they are going to have to make decisions together regarding Suri for many, many years," a source told People. "And they know she loves both her parents."
