That guy in the photo may look like Bret Michaels with a dye job, or Jon Bon Jovi after hitting the gym -- but it's none other than Tom Cruise, channelling his inner rock star for the upcoming film musical Rock of Ages!
The first look at the big-screen adaptation of the Tony-nomintated Broadway show has hit the Internet courtesy of TomCruise.com -- and it shows Cruise in all his mullet-sporting glory as '80s rocker Stacee Jaxx, who reunites his band Arsenal to help save a legendary Sunset Strip music club from demolition. Cruise's character may be fictional -- but according to director Adam Shankman, he's holding his own with some real-life '80s rockers.
"Surreal but true: Def Leppard just visited set of #rockofagesmovie," Shankman tweeted on Thursday. "Tom Cruise as Stacee and Arsenal performed Pour Some Sugar On Me, and they gave a standing ovation!"
Cruise fans may have been skeptical when he was cast in Rock of Ages, since he's never really been a singer (though wife Katie Holmes has been known to carry a tune). But he must have been keeping it under wraps all this time, because Shankman and his costars can't stop gushing about Cruise's performance.
"I'm not kidding, the guy can sing," costar Julianne Hough told MTV News on Monday. Hough recalls that she missed Tom's first day of shooting, and people were emailing her saying that "the crew was blown away" and he got a "standing ovation." Now that she's seen him for herself, Hough confirms that his talent is "ridiculous. There are no words to describe how amazing Tom is." (See the interview clip below.)
Cruise also managed to impress Alec Baldwin, who actually went to watch his costar shoot on his day off. "I was off work today and went to watch TC shoot," Baldwin tweeted on Friday. "He killed it. I mean, it was beyond great."
Even if Cruise isn't the next Axl Rose, we can totally see him pulling off the rock-star act. In Shankman's own words: "Who better to play the biggest rock god in the world but the biggest actor in the world?" Shankman has confirmed that Cruise will be tackling such beloved '80s ballads as Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" and Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane." He also says that Cruise does his fair share of dancing -- and he's taken to it like it's an extreme sport.
"He is dancing so much, we are all exhausted and laying down on the floor," says Shankman. "He is dancing us into the ground. I've never seen someone who wants us to rehearse more."
Hey, we all knew that Cruise could dance after seeing his Tropic Thunder alter-ego Les Grossman boogie with Jennifer Lopez at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. But now that we've seen his tattooed torso and leather pants, we're guessing that his moves for Rock of Ages will be a whole lot sexier!
