Tom Cruise, the same hunky man who gave us Top Gun, Mission: Impossible and Risky Business, turns 50 this July. But approaching the half-century milestone hasn't made him shy about baring his body, as he does in this summer's Rock of Ages -- or his soul, which he does in a candid interview in Playboy's June issue.
Over the course of his 30-year career, the actor his been the subject of plenty of rumors, some dealing with his sexuality, others about alleged marital problems with Katie Holmes, and plenty surrounding his championing of Scientology -- but Cruise has learned to pick his battles.
"I hear it, I read it, I get it. But life is not a matter of trying to prove anything to anybody," he tells Playboy (via People). "Does refuting things help? Not really. There comes a point when you just have to go, 'You know what? Here's how I've lived my life: I've never been late to a set. I make films I believe in. I feel privileged to be able to do what I love.' You just have to keep going and remember that."
That being said, Cruise isn't going to let people slander him or his family, and he isn't afraid to call his lawyer when necessary -- like in 2011, when Star magazine ran a cover story insinuating that Holmes had a drug problem.
"They know I mean it, that if I have to, I will sue," Cruise says. "You start with a letter saying, 'Okay, you know it's not true. Apologize.' But with certain ones you have to go, 'Okay, you crossed a line, and now you have the attention of my lawyers.' When it involves your kids, you have to go, 'Here's the line.'"
Cruise also opens up about his religion, Scientology. Though he says that he attributes his success to the religion, he's learned that he's in a "no-win position" when it comes to talking about it.
"If I don't talk about my religion, if I say I'm not discussing it or different humanitarian things I'm working on, they're like, 'He's avoiding it.' If I do talk about it, it becomes, 'Oh, he's proselytizing,'" Cruise says.
The actor goes on to say that he hasn't and "never would" have cosmetic surgery. So how does he stay so young looking? "I'm always with family," he says. "I train, go without sleep. I just go hard."
And, speaking of his family, Cruise has nothing but glowing things to say about Holmes, 33, and their 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
"[Katie] is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity," Cruise gushes. "When she walks into the room, I just feel better. I'm a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say -- I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."
