Tom DeLay's turn on the Dancing with the Stars floor was one of the most anticipated performances, and he did not disappoint -- if only in an "OMG, I can't believe my eyes" way.
The former House of Representatives Majority Leader was paired with Cheryl Burke, and though the two were a unlikely duo, what was more unexpected was their song choice: "Wild Thing" by 1960s band The Troggs. Not exactly the first thing that springs to mind when you think of a 62-year-old politician. His dated, brown polyester attire, on the other hand, seemed more in line with his demographic.
As for DeLay's moves, in addition to his rather stiff version of the cha-cha, he peppered the performance with lip-synching and over-the-top air-guitar flourishes. These flourishes earned him some scolding from Len Goodman, but otherwise the judges were remarkably easy on DeLay.
Regarding his scores, DeLay said it best in a behind-the-scenes video.
"I've had tougher critics, that's for sure," DeLay quipped affably. "I've gotta work longer and harder, and get some ice for my foot."
In that same behind-the-scenes clip, DeLay's competitor, Ashley Hamilton, said: "Tom DeLay was such a surprise. It's the best thing the Republican party has done in the last 8 years.
