Living up to its nickname as the Garden State, as well as its reputation for being a little crazy and, er, trashy, New Jersey is home to some of the freshest produce and some of the strangest and less-healthy (but no less tasty) regional specialties in the country. Tomatoes

The sweet and tangy combination of a Jersey beefsteak tomato fresh off the vine is hard to beat. No higher an authority than Camden, NJ-based Campbell’s thought they were good enough for their tomato soup, and with good reason. The tomato is even the official state vegetable (yes, even though it’s technically a fruit). Over the past decade, Rutgers University has been working to bring back old seed varieties like the Ramapo, a juicy and robust hybrid hailed by many as the ideal Jersey tomato.
