Even though bedtime might feel like your only opportunity during the day to be alone with your spouse in a quiet room, never use this time to broach big, emotional subjects—say, upcoming family gatherings, the state of your relationship and money. Dr. Lombardo says that an argument can cause the nervous system to respond to perceived danger, anger, fear or surprise, resulting in a high expenditure of energy. As anyone who has fought in bed knows, it can be nearly impossible to fall asleep afterwards. Instead of attempting to hash out issues when your heads hit the pillow, set aside time to talk about important problems and find resolutions during the day.
