Finally! American Idol has entered its live-show phase. That means anything can happen. Like, say, an intentional nip slip from Steven Tyler, or a contestant (Chase Likens) accidentally kicking a girl's hand.
Thank you, live TV, for these unexpectedly candid moments. They're much appreciated, because this crop of guys wasn't especially exciting in the singing department. Plus, viewers were privy to a lot of the usual business during last night's show, such as the judges complimenting vocal range, and Randy Jackson exclaiming that the night was "hot!" It was mildly surprising to hear that the judges had chosen gentle giant Jermaine Jones as the "lucky 13th" contestant of the night. (Most critics were expecting either David Leathers Jr. or Johnny Keyser.)
Heejun Han: The surprisingly smooth-voiced Asian (who wants to prove that Asians are good at more than just "getting a high score on the SAT") will probably be judged as much for his funny personality as for his singing. And that's as it should be, because his wacky comments are seriously entertaining. Singing Robbie Williams' "Angels," he showcased a voice that Lopez called "smooth as silk." Go Heejun!
How will the ladies do? The top 12 girls perform tonight at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. And we can look forward to a huge -- and sure to be dramatic -- elimination round on Thursday, where the group will be whittled down to a total of 12!
