Here's the Scary Reason Your Makeup Might Contain All Kinds of Toxins

Study shows women are exposed to more than 100 chemicals through cosmetics daily

They say beauty is pain, but we’re learning more and more that it may actually be toxic.

The Guardian reports on a study from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which finds that American women are exposed to more than 100 different chemicals daily through their cosmetics, some of which have been linked to fun stuff like cancer and birth defects. Ouch!

According to the newspaper, there’s very little government regulation when it comes to American cosmetic ingredients, noting that a panel called the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (which, The Guardian reports, is funded by the cosmetic industry) has banned just 11 chemicals for makeup in the United States, and that there are no penalties for companies who choose to use them anyway.

The European Union, the newspaper adds, has banned some 1,300 chemicals from beauty products.

“The current US Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act allows fragrance ingredients to be kept as trade secrets, meaning that consumers are kept in the dark about the chemicals they are exposed to from scented products,” says Erin Switalski, executive director of Women's Voices for the Earth. “Regulators have no way of knowing what potentially harmful ingredients might be contained in those products.”

So, besides making No Makeup Monday a daily occurrence, what can you do to limit the toxic chemicals you’re slathering on your face, hair and body? The newspaper says it’s up to consumers to tell companies they want chemical-free products.

Really, isn’t eyebrow plucking, waxing, microdermabrasion and the rest enough suffering in the name of beauty?
