Train Like a Tribute: The Hunger Games Workout

Fight to the death in a survival-of-the-fittest gym class

As if waiting in line for the midnight viewing of The Hunger Games wasn’t enough of an endurance feat, you can now whip your body into shape with the new Train Like a Tribute fitness class.

Indulge your fantasies of getting fit like The Hungeer Games heroine Katniss Everdeen with the new role-playing, fight-to-the-death sweat session. The intense, full-body workout simulates the four survival skills needed in The Hunger Games: archery, tree climbing, speed work and strength. As Eric Salvador, the 39-year-old trainer and former marine who designed the class for New York Sports Club, told Today, it’s survival of the fittest. Participants are thrown into the “arena” to size each other up and compete against each other. Whomever completes the most cycles of moves, like jabber-jay jacks, Katniss kickbacks, Peeta presses and Capitol crunches, wins. Gee, that doesn’t sound intimidating at all. The good news is no one dies by the end (we hope).

Some have even shown up to the preliminary classes dressed as the book’s characters. ABC News reported that mega-fan Jackie Seigle, came outfitted as Katniss and blew her competition away.

But don’t worry, you can still participate even if you’re not a Hunger Games fanatic. "If you haven't read the book, you'll still get a good workout," says Salvador. Phew! And here I was thinking that you wouldn’t burn any calories if you didn’t know the storyline.
