As worrisome as a diagnosis of autism might be, an array of behavioral therapies has been proven to help kids with autism spectrum disorders to develop social and communication skills and control harmful behaviors. They’re especially effective if started early, ideally by age 2 or at least as soon as autistic tendencies become apparent. In fact, says pediatrician Robert Sears, M.D., author of The Autism Book (April 2010), early intervention may do more than change behavior.
