Forget finding out the sex of your baby from the ultrasound tech or in the delivery room. Today, parents-to-be are opting for a truly sweet way of discovering whether they're having a boy or girl -- a gender-revealing baby cake!
That's right, many expectant moms and dads are now learning their baby's sex from the local baker. Here's how it works: The doctor keeps quiet about the baby's gender, writes down the top-secret info on a piece of paper and places it in a sealed envelope. Parents-to-be then deliver the envelope to a baker, who creates a cake that gives nothing away on the outside, but once you cut into it -- oh, the suspense! -- a shock of blue or pink filling appears.
To up the excitement, many expectant parents invite their nearest and dearest to witness the cake cutting, known as a gender reveal party. “It was the coolest thing we ever did,” says Corinne Campbell of Lindenhurst, NY, about the celebration she had for 40 friends and family members earlier this spring. Campbell, already a mom of two young boys, found out the gender of her first two children in the ultrasound room, but decided to go a more dramatic route for their third. (Check out her suspenseful YouTube video to experience the big moment for yourself.)
“I was in shock,” Campbell says of slicing the cake. “When I saw the pink filling, I almost dropped the knife. I didn’t think it was going to be a girl!”
Campbell and her husband are far from the only ones to go this route. Terri Leckas, owner of Queen of Cakes in Edina, MN, tells iVillage she did her first baby cake about two years ago, and now does three or four a week.
Some worry that these parties can spell trouble if parents have their heart set on a particular sex, or can be overkill if your guests are going to have to show up for a baby shower a few months later. But Aaliyah Baylor, owner of Make My Cake in Manhattan, which has done many gender reveal cakes, disagrees. “Any reason to celebrate, I’m for it!”
