Trista Sutter is not just the very first Bachelorette, she’s also the only one whose engagement led to marriage. She’s been married to her final rose recipient, Ryan Sutter, since 2003, and the couple have two children (son Max, 3, and daughter Blakesley, 1). So what’s her secret to having a successful reality TV relationship? Knowing what’s real and what’s reality TV. Trista has some valuable advice for the latest Bachelorette, Ali Fedotowsky, and her fiance Roberto Martinez.
"I think that Ali’s doing great and they seem happy," she tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively. "The best thing they can do is to enjoy the ride, but they need to understand that it’s just a ride, and they’re going to have to get off at some point and get back to life. It’s just a matter of knowing your priorities, and if they are each others’, then they should be fine."
Wise words for the new couple, especially from someone with Trista’s track record. She admits she’s constantly asked why she and Ryan have stayed together while almost every other Bachelor and Bachelorette relationship ever forged on the show has failed.
"I can’t say why others haven‘t succeeded, I can only speak to why Ryan and I have," she told us. "For us, once we were off the show, we focused on making our relationship our priority and not buying into the hype. We don’t just love each other, we also like each other and respect each other and enjoy each other’s company. The fairytale situation of the show is just that. You’re completely and totally focused on whether or not you like this person, and reality doesn’t intrude at all. Then, when you get back to reality, it doesn’t always fit. For us, it did."
We have to admit, we do love a happy ending, and now that Trista has hers, she hopes that Ali and Roberto have one for themselves.
