When HBO’s True Blood airs its third season premiere this Sunday (June 13, 10 p.m. ET), it will start up right where it left us hanging. Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) sexy vampire boyfriend Bill (Paquin’s real-life fiance, Stephen Moyer) had just popped the question. She excused herself to go freak out about it in the bathroom before answering “yes.” When she returned to the table, he’d been kidnapped. (The lesson here? When your hunky undead lover asks for your hand, just say yes already. Sheesh.)
So as season 3 unfolds, she’s searching for him -- with the help of her vampire friend Eric (Alexander Skarsgard), who also happens to be Bill’s rival for her love. When it appears that werewolves were involved in the abduction, Eric enlists a “nice” werewolf named Alcide (Joe Manganiello) to protect Sookie during her quest. "Alcide is this just and moral man,” Manganiello recently told tvsquad.com. “And he sees some things going on that he can't ignore, and so that kind of throws him into the action. He's a big, sensitive bunny rabbit inside of this wolf monster clothing ... A sheep in wolf's clothing!"
This being True Blood, there are several other storylines running parallel to the main one -- with werewolves emerging as the overall, season-long enemies of both vampires and humans. Of course, different vampires and humans will react to the threat in different ways. "If last season's general theme was religion, I would say this season's theme is probably politics -- vampire politics," executive producer Alan Ball told Entertainment Weekly.
As always, though, the show’s theme comes down to one central truth: Mortal women and undead guys aren’t exactly a match made in heaven. More like hell on earth.
