Oh, True Blood. You and your cheeky cliff-hangers.
"Sookie," says a Random (Fairy?) Woman, in the closing moments of Sunday's season finale. "You're not alone. Come with us." Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Random Woman become illuminated -- and then enveloped -- in a peaceful, golden light. And… poof. Gone. Like the sci-fi version of The Soprano's final fizz-out (another HBO show, by the way).
No, last night's True Blood finale wasn't hung up on closure. The last time the episode shows Bill (Stephen Moyer), he's heading into a vampire duel with the Queen (Evan Rachel Wood). (He's over-matched, but as he pointed out, he has nothing left to lose.) A seemingly suicidal Tara (Rutina Wesley) has just cut her hair, told Sookie she's going to Merlotte's Bar, and driven into the darkness instead. Where is she going? Tune in next season!
Other ends remaining loose: While Russell (Denis O'Hare) appears to be buried in cement, Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) is alive and well (despite Bill's efforts to encapsulate him, too). Hoyt (Jim Parrack) and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) are moving in together (despite his mama and ex-girlfriend's attempt to persuade him otherwise), but their future's looking ominous. And Jason (Ryan Kwanten) has become the leader of some vagabonds with dental issues. Seriously.
True Blood plays by its own rules, and that's fair enough. Vampires, werewolves and shape shifters aren't exactly law abiders. So maybe you can't expect a show about these characters to politely acquiesce to the usual principles of "intro-climax-resolution" storytelling. We did learn one juicy, little nugget though -- that Bill originally tracked down Sookie on the Queen's errand. And at least the final episode was a wild ride -- and a funny one. Here are some of the humorous quotes:
"Dear Hoyt, you are my first and only born," says Hoyt's mama (Dale Raoul). "And if you think I'm going to let you throw your life away on a red-headed dead girl, you are sorely mistaken."
"Sometimes the right thing to do is the wrong thing," says Jason. "And I know I did the right thing."
"You're a witch who's a nurse who's a dude?" Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) says to Jesus (Kevin Alejandro). "I guess I lucked out there now."
