Got any plans for Bella Swan's birthday? If not, head down to your local multiplex tonight and join the festivities. Bella, of course, is the heroine of the Twilight books and films -- and while her birthday isn't technically until Monday, Twilight: Eclipse is returning to theaters for one night only in honor of the big event. That big event being... the birthday of a fictional character.
Okay, we admit that we'll jump at any excuse to eat birthday cake and/or look at Robert Pattinson -- but isn't the idea of celebrating Bella's birthday a little weird? First of all, as anyone who read the books can tell you, one of Bella's defining characteristics is that she hates birthdays, presents and parties. (This is why she's hanging out with vampires, folks.)
Also, she technically stopped aging when she (spoiler alert!) became a vampire. And if, for the sake of argument, she's still counting birthdays, how old would she even be this year? Oh, right, we don't know -- because she's a fictional character.
Insiders speculate that Summit Entertainment has an ulterior motive in celebrating Bella's big day: They're trying to boost the movie's box office to a record $300 million (it currently stands at $298.8). If that's the case, then why bother with the birthday ruse? I'm sure an event called Make 'Twilight: Eclipse' The Highest-Grossing Movie Day would attract just as many loyal fans, if not more.
So: are producers going too far with the Eclipse re-release, or are they doing fans a welcome favor by bringing Taylor Lautner's abs back to the big screen? Personally, we think if they're going to call it a birthday party, Summit Entertainment should go all the way: We want free werewolf charm bracelets, vampire teeth and maybe one of these fancy Twilight cakes. If they're just going to show us a movie we've already paid $12 to see, then we may just end up celebrating at home.
Then again, there are worse companions for a Friday night than a bunch of larger-than-life vamps and wolves ...
