Tonight's the second-to-last episode of ABC's Ugly Betty (10 p.m. ET)—setting the stage for the highly anticipated (by Betty fans, anyway) April 14 finale. There's a lot up in the air for our beautiful-on-the-inside heroine, both professionally and personally.
Obviously, viewers want a happy ending for Mode's associate features editor. But what does that mean, exactly? Should Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) end up with the dashing, wealthy big shot, Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius); the smart, athletic, former sex addict Matt Hartley (Daniel Eric Gold); or the well-read accounting department nerd, Henry Grubsick (Christopher Gorham)? (And do any of these guys really deserve her?)
When the final credits roll on this series, should this straight-shooting girl from Queens continue to climb the ladder within the shallow, backbiting fashion magazine culture? Or would she be better off in an entirely different field? The show has leaked a few answers--the last episode features Betty launching her own magazine, and the last scenes were filmed in London—but plot details are still under wraps. Tonight, at least, we'll get a first glimpse at where the writers are going.
As her sister Hilda's (Ana Ortiz) wedding day approaches, Betty must figure out her "plus one" situation at the event. She's already asked Henry (via an unfortunate drunk-dialing incident), but according to the episode's promo, she'll end up bringing Daniel. The promo also teases that Betty "considers unexpected offers in her personal and professional life."
One thing's for sure: it will be a heartfelt ending for Betty's close-knit cast and crew. As reported in New York magazine, the "tearful, raucous" wrap party was a roller coaster of emotion for nearly everyone involved. "America Ferrera arrived at the venue, Room Service, with her boyfriend, and saying she needed a few moments to collect herself, shooed away cameras, and went immediately to a quiet corner," wrote Bennett Marcus. "Some of the producers choked up while addressing the crowd, and Ana Ortiz and Eric Mabius embraced the tearful Ferrera, who finally took the microphone herself and made an emotional speech, thanking everyone involved with the show."
